Traders waive off sit-down strike

The hardware Sector of the Nakasero Traders of the CBD waived off their sit-down strike this morning, 21st April 2017.

The hardware sector (Nakasero Hardware Business Association) resolved to close their shops to highlight their complaint about foreign intruders in their market, specifically the Chinese squeezing the local traders out of business.

Later, after realizing that KACITA UGANDA had already engaged the relevant institutions and policy makers including Ministry of Trade and Industry, the Parliamentary Committee for Trade Industry and Tourism, Prime Minister’s Office, relevant institutions like URA, KCCA, UNBS, UIA, URSB among others to effect policy in relation to this, which has greatly progressed in Parliament, they waived off the strike.

Much as the Traders and the business community recognize the role of the foreign business players in the market, emphasis is for policy to be put in place to protect the local traders in business and let the foreign investors specialize in manufacturing and thus be gazetted in the business industrial parks e.g Namanve and Luzira, leaving the local traders to do the distribution downtown.
